Lady Myers Celebrates Her Birth

Happy Birthday to me! Oh, how I love my birthday. I love having a day of being special and put first. I soak up the love and well wishes from those near and far, close and merely passing acquaintances (thanks to the Internet and various social media sites). Having a birthday in between Christmas and New Year’s can be tricky, but I’ve had 33 years to get used to it. Sometimes I have a party, sometimes I keep it small. My 30th birthday was pretty spectacular as my husband took me on my first trip to Ireland. Today is falling on the low-key side, which is exactly what I want. I get to see (most of) the important people in my life, enjoy a massage, and feast on ice cream and a nice dinner at one of my favorite local joints. Although I had to get up early to attend to my caregiving duties, I was fully awake before my alarm went off and buzzing with good spirits. I had an egg and croissant sandwich for breakfast and a pumpkin mocha for a snack. It’s all about treating myself and filling my day with fun and relaxation. I know most people are concentrating their energy on tomorrow night, and that’s okay. I know I’m not forgotten and actually love all the prezzies I get in the aftermath. Thanks to the brilliance of “Parks & Recreation,” my answer to everything today...

Join the Rule Rebellion!

I had a very nice, orderly to-do list that would let me take next week mostly off. On that list was writing another blog post this week. The post I had drafted needs to be postponed, which left me kind of panicking. I noticed that there were some rules around blogging that were inducing this panic, so I have decided to publicly flaunt them. So what? You may very well ask. But I am not the rule-breaking type. I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve been formally punished for breaking the rules. It’s just not my thing. Some rules, however, need to be broken. Rule 1: All blog posts must be at least 500 words. Rule 2: All blog posts must be full of valuable or inspiring information. Rule 3: Never post on a Friday afternoon. Rule 4: Never post a first draft. I’m breaking all of these, right here, right now! What a rebel I am. It’s always more fun to rebel with others, so join me, won’t you? Is there a task on your list today that has some rules around it that could use a little breaking? It doesn’t have to be biz-related. Maybe you have a rule about not commenting on blog posts unless you can think of something super-smart to say. Break that one! Leave a comment just saying “Hi” or “Merry Christmas” or “Silent Retreat.” This rebel thing feels pretty good,...

Creating My Goddess Year 2012: Key Zen Habits

Prompted by Goddess Leonie’s Creating Your Goddess Year* guide, I am transitioning mindfully out of 2011 and into 2012. Goddess Leonie gently reminds us that we should be mindful about creating these habits. They should be filled with ease, permission and joy. For example, I may want to resolve that I will exercise for an hour every day but know that I’m going to have a hard time achieving that. Instead, maybe I aim for at least 15 minutes, and include yoga, cleaning, and gentle walks in my definition of exercise. I’m also going to keep in mind that what works for me in January may not by September, so assessment and revision is a good thing. In fact, why don’t I just go with Things That Are Already Working and Things I’d Like to Try During the First Quarter? Things That Are Already Working Shiva Nata* (almost) daily. Meditating for 10-15 minutes (almost) daily. Writing in my journal most days. Some form of yoga most days. Cardio/strength sessions 2-3 times a week. Getting enough rest, including naps when I need them. Eating a mostly gluten- and meat- free diet. Things I’d Like to Try During the First Quarter First off, this is, by far, the most difficult time of year for me. I’m the most likely to suffer from depression and anxiety at this time, due to SAD and the let-down from the holidays (which includes my birthday). I’m more likely to question why I’m doing what I’m doing and find fault with all of my plans and failed attempts. There’s just nothing for me to look forward...
